They Won't Remember How Busy You Were
Your Presence Is Your Legacy
There comes a point in life when you start realizing just how quickly the years move.
The kids grow up. Parents get older. Careers change. Friends move away. People we thought would always be around suddenly aren't.
And somewhere along the way, you begin to understand something:
Time isn't slowing down for any of us.
For years, many of us have been focused on building.
Building careers. Building businesses. Building financial security. Building a reputation. Building a better life for the people we love.
Those aren't bad things. Providing for your family matters. Working hard matters. Building something meaningful matters.
But there's a danger in becoming so focused on building a life that we forget to actually live it with the people we're building it for.
We tell ourselves we'll have more time later.
After this project.
After this busy season.
After we make a little more money.
After we reach the next goal.
But later isn't promised.
🟩│ "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom." — Psalm 90:12
That isn't a call to live afraid of running out of time. It's a reminder that understanding our time is limited should change the way we use it.
The conversation matters.
The dinner matters.
The fishing trip matters.
The phone call matters.
Sitting across from someone you love and actually listening matters.
Showing up when a friend needs you matters.
We tend to think about legacy as something we leave behind someday.
But legacy isn't built at the end of your life.
You're building it right now.
In your children.
In your marriage.
In your friendships.
In the men you mentor.
In the people you encourage.
Someday, people may remember some of what you accomplished.
But the people closest to you will remember something much more important.
They'll remember whether you were there.
Forged Truth
Legacy isn't something you leave behind when your life is over.
You're building it every day in the lives of the people God has placed around you.
Don't become so busy building your future that you miss the people who are part of it.
Forged Action
Give someone you love one uninterrupted hour this week.
No phone.
No television.
No multitasking.
No agenda.
Maybe it's your wife. Your son or daughter. Your parents. A close friend. Someone you haven't spent enough time with lately.
Don't try to accomplish anything.
Just be there.
Listen. Talk. Laugh. Be present.
An hour may not sound like much.
But someday you may realize those were the hours that mattered most.
Close
There will always be another task.
Another meeting.
Another goal.
Another opportunity to work.
But there won't always be another dinner with your parents, another Saturday with your kids, another conversation with an old friend, or another ordinary evening with the person you love.
Don't wait until something is gone to understand how valuable it was.
Build the business. Pursue the mission. Work hard. Make an impact.
But don't miss your life while you're building it.
Be where your feet are.
The people you love don't need a perfect version of you.
They need a present one.
